VirtualBox impressed me - I was able to get a multiplayer session of Diablo running on real IPX. As long as you have a copy of Windows XP to install, you can get it running in VirtualBox and have an XP that runs in a window on your Windows 7 desktop - or full-screen if you prefer. The alternative I found was VirtualBox (free!), which probably does exactly what you had hoped XP Mode would do. Disappointing, isn't it?Īs someone who plays a lot of older PC games myself, I went through XP Mode like you did, found out it couldn't do what I wanted, and looked for an alternative. That makes XP Mode virtually useless (no pun intended) for gaming purposes. As far as I know, anything full screen (like Diablo) or requiring 3D graphics won't work at all. Microsoft's vaunted "Windows XP mode" for Windows 7 is only meant to run programs in a window. It starts with a creepy poem.īy the end of this video, Ares the Barbarian was Level 58. It is my favorite part of The Darkening of Tristram event (and the original Diablo game). In this video, my Barbarian goes through The Halls of the Blind. I quickly learned that Ares the Hardcore Barbarian was not properly geared up for this, and probably should have hit at least Level 60 before attempting it. This video starts where the previous one left off – right in front of the entry to Labyrinth Level 7.
